"Last Orders" by Graham Swift (Picador, 1996)
It took me a while to get into the rhythm of Last Orders. But once on board with Graham Swift’s 1996 Booker Prize novel, his quiet development of character and plot shine through this tightly constructed book. It’s a road story about friendship and death, family and living, and how the middle class in England reconstructed their lives after WWII. A bleak but satisfying and quick read.
